Benavides said intersection-mounted equipment would be costly and limited to one intersection at a time. He described the software option as "using a bunch of analytics from all the different mapping, softwares, the stuff on your cell phone, and aggregates it all into reports," and said it allows staff to run counts anywhere in the city and to look backward over a limited historical period.
Staff reported a cost estimate in the vendor response of roughly $15,000 to $20,000 to put the system in place and noted that the product is subscription-based; Benavides said the subscription is annual. "For the price of the 1 intersection, we could do the entire city, at any given point," he said. He added the system could help meet grant or planning requirements that ask for vehicle-miles-traveled or safety statistics.
Council asked whether the vendor estimate was an installation fee or an annual charge; Benavides confirmed the cited cost was for putting the system in place and that the subscription would recur annually. No formal funding request or contract award was presented at the meeting; the item was informational and no vote was taken.
Public comment did not raise objections on the traffic-count item. Staff said they can procure the service for a shorter or longer term depending on council preference and that they would return with contract details and firm pricing if the council requests further action.
