Morton Grove police win Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge category and receive DUI-enforcement honors

At the Sept. 9 meeting, an Illinois Department of Law Enforcement liaison presented awards recognizing the Morton Grove Police Department for statewide traffic safety work and three officers for DUI enforcement efforts.
The Morton Grove Police Department was recognized Sept. 9 for statewide traffic safety work, receiving first place in the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge in the municipal 36–50 officers category and a separate Railroad Safety Award, officials said.
Paul Rizzo, the Illinois Department of Law Enforcement liaison who presented the award, noted his long involvement with the Traffic Safety Challenge and praised Morton Grove officers for consistent performance. "It never gets old coming to a board meeting and presenting an award to people who do so much work and such good work," Rizzo said.
Mayor Janine Whitko and village staff highlighted individuals cited in the department’s award submissions. The department singled out Sergeant Nick Hoffman for overseeing traffic efforts and thanked Officer Mike Zahhaki as a primary author of the award submission. In addition, three officers were honored by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AIM) for DUI enforcement work: Officer Robert Bridal, Officer Lindsey LaPaglia and Detective Carlos Sima. The AIM citations were presented to recognize their efforts in impaired-driving enforcement.
Mayor Whitko called the recognition "wonderful," and the village encouraged residents with traffic concerns to contact the police department and ask for Sergeant Nick Hoffman, who the village said oversees traffic matters.
Why it matters The awards highlight the village police department’s traffic-enforcement activities and the department’s emphasis on railroad safety and DUI enforcement. The board received the presentation as part of its special-reports segment; no board action was required on the awards.
