City staff told the Hawaiian Gardens City Council on Sept. 10 that the city received a Caltrans supplemental agreement providing $1,500,000 for improvements to Norwalk Boulevard and Pioneer Boulevard.
A city public works speaker said the agreement was signed by both the city manager and Caltrans and described the funding as a last‑minute opportunity that staff expedited before the end of the fiscal year. No specific project budget or construction schedule tied to the Caltrans funds was presented at the council meeting beyond the statement that the supplemental agreement was executed.
Public works and facilities updates
Public works staff also reported progress on several ongoing initiatives: wrapping utility boxes along Norwalk Boulevard and Pioneer Boulevard, nearing completion of City Hall roof replacement with an expected 15‑year manufacturer warranty and 5‑year contractor warranty, and commencement of reroofing work at the C. Robert Lee Activity Center (east wing demolition underway). Staff said the utility box wrapping on arterial streets should be complete by the end of the month.
Consent calendar vote
The council approved the consent calendar on a voice/roll‑call motion and unanimous vote. The mayor asked for a motion; a council member moved and another seconded. The roll call recorded “yes” votes from Council member Farfan, Council member Roa, Council member Vargas, Mayor Pro Tem del Rio and Mayor De Pala. The mayor announced the motion carried.
Other staff briefings
City staff also provided brief updates about a security camera rebate program for residents and businesses, an OpenGov implementation for Community Development plan checking, an 18‑unit project under plan check on Hawaiian Avenue, eight active ADU planning applications, and a kickoff meeting for a city ERP implementation with a target of returning to council with an RFP and purchase request in April (timeline subject to change).
No new legislative action recorded
The Caltrans supplemental agreement was announced as an executed document; the council did not vote separately on the Caltrans funding at the Sept. 10 meeting. The council recessed into a closed session on a city manager performance item and reported that no reportable action was taken in closed session when it reconvened.
Ending
Council members thanked staff for the updates; staff said construction and program details would be returned to the council as needed for approvals.
