The Coffee County School Board on Sept. 24 voted 8-0 to appoint a five-member Disciplinary Hearing Authority (DHA) and two alternates, approving the panel as recommended under district policy.
The panel, which the board approved by motion, is intended to hear appeals of certain disciplinary decisions. Board members said the appointees were listed by number in a confidential email rather than by name to protect privacy. District policy 6.317, which the board cited during the meeting, requires the DHA to include at least one certified teacher.
Board members raised questions about timing and procedure during a brief discussion. One board member noted policy 6.316, which states that appeals should go to a disciplinary hearing authority appointed by the board and, if none is appointed, to the board itself. That member said the DHA should have been in place before the school year began; others agreed the panel should be a standing item for annual reappointment.
Board members also discussed an upcoming hearing scheduled for Oct. 1 and asked the board attorney to clarify whether that matter should be heard by the newly appointed DHA or by the full board. The board agreed to refer the determination to board attorney Cagle.
A motion to approve the makeup of the DHA as recommended by district staff was made and seconded; the motion passed 8-0. The board then adjourned.
