Brightline West presented an update on its proposed high-speed rail project linking Las Vegas to Southern California and answered questions from the joint Nevada–California boards.
Tom Roehmcamp, identified as a civil engineer for Brightline West, described a roughly 220-mile corridor between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, with trains expected to run up to 186 miles per hour and a target end-to-end trip time of about two hours. Project planners estimate annual ridership near 8,600,000 once operating.
Stations described in the presentation include a Las Vegas Boulevard station south of the 215 beltway, inline stations in Victor Valley and Hesperia, and a Southern California station collocated with Rancho Cucamonga MetroLink to enable regional transfers. A maintenance facility is planned near Sloan, Nevada, just south of Las Vegas.
Roehmcamp said the railroad will be primarily single-track with approximately 180 miles single track and about 40 miles of double track in passing sections placed to support hourly headways. Trains will be electric, drawing power from overhead catenary, and Brightline announced Siemens trainsets with seven passenger cars and about 430 seats per trainset; the operator intends to start with 10 trainsets and expand over time.
On schedule questions, project staff said they expect to reach commercial operation targets in the mid-to-late 2020s and that early geotechnical work, station site prep and limited infrastructure work were already underway in Nevada.
Board members asked about timing and early construction, and project staff reiterated plans for electrical traction power substations and connection to regional utilities, including Southern California Edison and Nevada Energy. The presentation concluded with staff saying construction activity would expand as major work packages were let to civil and systems contractors.
The presentation was informational; no board actions or approvals related to the rail project were taken at the meeting.
