The Village Board voted to approve a special‑use permit to convert 172–174 Herricks Road into a Taekwondo and wrestling studio, following a presentation by owner‑operator Brian Lancey and a period for board and public comment.
Lancey told trustees he has taught martial arts for more than 30 years and proposed a mixed Taekwondo and scholastic wrestling program aimed at children and adults. He said weekday class hours would run roughly 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with Saturday classes around mid‑morning (about 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and an intent to keep Sundays largely family time. He emphasized a non‑aggressive, defensive Taekwondo curriculum and age‑ and rank‑segmented class sizes, noting a typical class of about 10 students and 45‑minute class sessions with a 15‑minute gap for transitions.
Lancey described the proposed build‑out as minimal: paint, floor mats and possibly mirrors, and no structural changes. He said he will not perform cooking or open food preparation on site but might sell bottled water and prepackaged snacks. Trustee and resident questions focused on hours, expected class sizes, parking and how pickups and dropoffs would be managed; Lancey said he would encourage parents to use on‑site parking and nearby lots and to avoid dropping children into adjacent residential streets.
The board acted on a motion by Deputy Mayor Sartorius, seconded by Trustee Soloski. The clerk recorded aye votes from Trustee Clark, Trustee Casado, Trustee Salaski and Mayor Ferrer. Trustees reiterated that any signage or exterior lighting plans must be submitted to the building department for approval and reminded the applicant to coordinate on municipal parking and traffic flow during class start/stop times.
Residents and the board welcomed the studio as a new business that can serve the local youth and complement Mineola’s high school wrestling program. The applicant said he hopes to open quickly after permits are issued and will coordinate with the village for any openings or ribbon‑cutting events.
The board’s supporting documentation included the Nassau County Planning Commission’s local determination and a Type 2 CEQA action noted in the record.
