School committee approves Liberty School playground upgrades and walking path

The Braintree School Committee on Monday unanimously approved a plan from the Liberty School Recreation Committee to improve the school’s outdoor spaces, including installation of new basketball hoops, painted blacktop games and a paved walking path around the field.
Kelly Sweeney, a parent and member of the Liberty committee, described months of volunteer work and fundraising over the spring and summer that produced two new basketball hoops, painted play surfaces and other improvements to make recess more active and safer. Committee members noted the changes had already increased use of the blacktop and improved recess options.
Sweeney told the committee the group is pursuing additional fundraising and sponsorships for a walking path they hope to complete by the school’s Halloween parade. Longer‑term goals include a turf field and a small pavilion or picnic area for outdoor classes and community use; the committee was told the group is not seeking town funds for the initial walking path work.
Facilities staff told the committee the Liberty field has an irrigation well and system installed by a prior PTO (circa 2009) and that limited work could restore the system and allow temporary seeding while the committee continues to raise funds for turf.
The motion to approve the Liberty playground project was moved by Dr. Horak and seconded by Ms. Tuffy. The vote was unanimous.
