Braintree to start comprehensive facilities master plan; demographic and K–4 studies expected in October

School leaders on Monday updated the Braintree School Committee on a three‑phase master planning effort that will include a K–4 program and space efficiency review, a 10‑year demographic enrollment forecast and a facility‑visioning study covering district buildings.
Officials said ERS (a consulting firm previously engaged by the district) has completed a focused study of kindergarten‑through‑fourth‑grade programming and space efficiencies and is preparing a presentation for the committee at its Oct. 6 meeting. District staff said the ERS review considered regular classroom programming and special‑education placements to identify possible operational efficiencies if the district were to consider consolidation of elementary schools.
The committee was told that Cropper GIS is finalizing a demographic and enrollment forecast that includes a 10‑year projection of enrollment trends; staff said the report should be available this week and also expected to be discussed on Oct. 6.
The third phase is a facilities planning and visioning study. District and town procurement staff reported they reissued an RFP after a first round returned a single bid. The second solicitation produced six responses, the team interviewed three finalists and the district expects to notify the selected firm this week and begin the planning work soon. The consultant team will design multiple layers of community engagement and is expected to produce options that tie capital cost estimates to student‑experience impacts.
Committee members discussed the potential structure of a community working group. Officials said they expect to form a working group of community members, PTO representatives and town staff and to provide additional opportunities for broader participation via surveys and online engagement. Several members asked that public meetings be scheduled so the community can follow consultant discussions.
The committee did not vote on a preferred option at Monday’s meeting; staff said reports and consultant selections would be brought back for committee consideration in early October.
