Board hears update on geothermal projects, roofing, tracks and facilities maintenance cycles

Carroll County Public Schools facilities staff updated board and county members on recent and planned facilities projects, including geothermal heating and cooling installations, roofing and paving cycles, and track replacements.

Staff reported that prior geothermal projects showed energy use reductions in the 20–30 percent range and that, based on earlier analyses, payback for the higher initial installation costs had been estimated at roughly four to eight years. Facilities staff noted the primary constraint for geothermal installation is site condition (available acreage and subsurface suitability) because boreholes and drilling are required.

Board and staff also described ongoing maintenance cycles: track resurfacing is managed on roughly a 10‑year cycle and the system has reduced the worst paving backlogs; the district has largely completed replacement of older single‑ply roofing and is moving toward a steady cycle of roof replacements coordinated with other capital work to avoid repeat construction impacts.

Staff said several future projects (Northwest Middle was mentioned as a candidate) could include geothermal if the site test results and budgets justify it. Officials noted the operational advantages of distributed heat‑pump systems (reduced single‑point failures and improved classroom comfort) as an additional benefit beyond energy savings.

No procurement awards or precise budget figures were included in the briefing; staff said details would be included in the comprehensive maintenance plan and the district’s forthcoming capital reports.
