The Columbia Heights Public Schools Board of Education approved the district’s annual insurance renewal at its Sept. 23 meeting, accepting the renewal package for property, liability, business auto, umbrella, boiler/machinery and cyber coverage.
Director Hennikins (presenter) reviewed the renewal materials the board had discussed at the Sept. 16 work session and said the total renewal premium on the proposed package was about $358,001.93 versus the prior total of $346,860.69, representing about a 3.3% increase. The presenter said the district’s carriers include Chubb, Hanover and Travelers for cyber liability and noted improvements in the district’s cybersecurity posture and facility maintenance that helped limit larger premium increases.
Board members asked for details about deductible levels and cyber coverage. The presenter said the cyber-liability deductible is $25,000 and that separate crime coverage adds a further $100,000 of limits; the presenter also explained that deductibles on various lines had increased over recent years but had moderated this renewal cycle.
A board member moved to approve the renewal and to correct a typographical error in the motion package (the spelling of Hanover). The motion, as clarified, passed on a voice vote; one member recorded an abstention on the roll call as noted in the meeting.
Board members credited recent capital investments—roof and facilities work and a major project at Columbia Academy—for helping to stabilize property-liability renewals. The director said continued maintenance and cybersecurity improvements remain key to managing future premiums.
