Hamilton County commission to consider $13.6 million in 2024 bond funds for school repairs and turf fields

The Hamilton County Commission on Sept. 24 discussed a resolution to appropriate up to $13,595,500 in 2024 bond funds to Hamilton County Schools for phase 4 of deferred maintenance and facility improvements.

The measure, read into the record as Resolution 1025Dash12, covers a package of projects the school system prioritized, including athletic turf installations, heating/air conditioning, roof repairs and playground upgrades across multiple schools.

Mayor Womp, presenting the item, said the allocation continues multi-year work to address school facilities and called the distribution "a pretty fair and appropriate, spreading of these resources across, the school and across the county." He described a mix of ordinary deferred maintenance and more visible investments such as artificial turf at several high schools.

The resolution matters because it directs a portion of the 2024 bond proceeds to urgent building repairs and higher‑visibility projects that county officials and school leaders say have widespread community demand. School system staff told the commission the projects were vetted by the school board and prioritized by officials overseeing facility work.

Commissioners responded with praise and questions about specific projects. Commissioner Shipley and several colleagues thanked school and county staff for completing projects and noted the work was long sought in many communities. Commissioner Highlander emphasized appreciation for a proposed turf field for Central High School and said the school community was "very appreciative" that the field was being prioritized.

School board vice chair Steve Slater told commissioners the school board has already voted to approve the projects and is coordinating with county staff on implementation. Justin Witt, identified in the meeting as leading project prioritization for the school system, and facilities staff were present to answer technical questions.

County officials said these funds are part of a continuing effort that has already addressed large amounts of school square footage. A county official noted that "this summer alone, a million square feet of HVAC fixing was done," citing ongoing deferred maintenance work funded by earlier allocations.

No formal vote on Resolution 1025Dash12 was recorded at the Sept. 24 meeting; commissioners said the item will be taken up at the next meeting for formal consideration.

The commission scheduled its next meeting for Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m.; staff said project lists and further details will be provided to commissioners before final action.
