East Grand Rapids schedules Main Field turf replacement; Lakeside Elementary to add school-funded turf

East Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation staff told the commission on Sept. 22 that the Main Field turf replacement project will mobilize next week and is expected to take about four to five weeks, weather permitting.
The project will require temporary safety fencing around the field where it does not already exist and a construction access area for semi trucks delivering and removing turf materials. Parks staff said the parking lot will remain open but that certain pick‑up areas near the field will be disrupted while crews work.
"They will be mobilizing next Monday. That's possible. They'll start to deliver some safety fencing this week," Parks staff member Derek said, adding the work is scheduled to run "approximately 4 to 5 weeks" and is weather dependent because of adhesive and temperature requirements.
Commissioners asked about service life. Derek said with proper preventative maintenance, synthetic turf typically lasts "10 to 12 years," though excessive wear can shorten that span.
At the same meeting staff also said Lakeside Elementary will install artificial turf in a heavily used playground area. The school district will pay the cost; the city will process the work as a change order under its existing construction contract so the district reimburses the city for the expense.
"There's still some items that we're working on with them. And so this artificial turf project will be a change order, as part of that contract," Derek said. He added the district intends to cover the cost and that joint‑facilities committee conversations about long‑term maintenance and whether the new turf counts toward the city's turf‑replacement fund are expected to follow.
Separately, commissioners discussed a damaged new playground piece at Manhattan Park. Staff said the manufacturer has been contacted and a change order or recommended replacement parts are expected shortly; staff noted the damage appeared to be the result of either vandalism or misuse and that the manufacturer may recommend different attachment hardware or a replacement play unit.
The commission was advised that the Main Field enclosure and construction logistics will restrict some routes used by middle‑school students and parents for a short period while work is underway. Staff said communications will be coordinated with the school district about recess and pick‑up impacts.
The Parks and Recreation Commission did not take a formal vote on these capital project updates at the meeting; staff framed the items as project scheduling and coordination updates.
