Skinner said the four items are: - Section IGBGA: Online courses and virtual school programs — primarily legal citation and grammatical updates. - Section IGAE/IGAF: Health education and physical education — adds content required by the Code of Virginia, including required mental health training, hazing prevention training and junior reserve officers' training corps (JROTC) as a possible fulfillment of PE requirements; the text mirrors state code items and clarifies what the division teaches. - Section IGAJ: Driver education — adds a statutory requirement that the Department of Motor Vehicles notify the division if a driver education instructor employed by the division accumulates more than six demerit points. - Section IIBE/AGAB: Acceptable computer system use — updates hardware/software language to reflect current practice, adds references to artificial intelligence and cites state code language concerning permitted applications and update frequency.
Skinner said most changes reflect state code language and guidance. Board members asked clarifying questions about specific applications and referenced companies (for example, TikTok and WeChat) and county controls. Staff indicated the policy language is taken from state code.
Skinner said the policies are for discussion tonight and will be presented in the regular meeting packet for first reading later this month; second reading and potential adoption are scheduled for the October regular meeting.
