Liberty Public Schools launched a monthly recognition program called the LPS award (Love, Positivity and Strength) to honor students for character and community contribution. Three students from elementary, middle and high school were recognized at Thursday's board meeting.
Liberty Public Schools introduced a monthly student-recognition program and honored three students Thursday as the first recipients.
The district will present the LPS award 'standing for Love, Positivity and Strength' monthly at board meetings to two or three students from selected schools. The program emphasizes character qualities such as kindness, resilience, compassion and inclusive behavior rather than academic or athletic achievements.
At Thursday's meeting the first recipients were Adrianne (a fifth-grader at Lewis and Clark Elementary), Leo Sherring (a Liberty Middle School student) and Sofia Marsh (Liberty North High School). Presenters read nominations from building staff describing each student's contributions: Adrianne for quietly welcoming new students and steady compassion; Leo for persevering and supporting peers, including English-language learners; and Sofia for volunteer leadership, work on the high school's Hope Squad and involvement in multiple committees while maintaining a high GPA.
Board members recessed the meeting briefly to allow trustees and administrators to greet the students and their families.
District staff said nominations were solicited from building leaders and that dozens of stories had already been received. The program will continue monthly across building levels for the 2025'26 school year.
