Council removes school speed zone on South State Street after engineering study

City staff presented findings from a traffic-engineering review (using MUTCD guidance) that called into question the effectiveness of the reduced-speed designation at the site. Officials noted the intersection’s signal and bus stop configurations, and the engineering memo recommended removing the scheduled school-zone speed reduction while retaining crosswalk striping and adding pedestrian signage where needed.
Lieutenant Tucker and staff discussed how the bus stop at that location means few children cross at the marked crosswalk; council members also noted confusing signal coverage and the proximity of a separate bus drop-off. The council agreed to remove the special school speed zone and keep pedestrian markings and signage in place; signage and other pedestrian-safety measures were discussed as follow-ups. The motion to implement the engineering recommendation passed on a voice vote.
Why it matters: The change adjusts traffic-calming measures at a location where staff said the current school-zone configuration may not match actual pedestrian and bus activity.
