Public services committee previews solar grant, veterans memorial committee and three major road projects

YELM, Wash. — At the Sept. 23 meeting the Yelm City Council’s public services committee reported several pending items: a grant application to install solar at the Public Services Building, the creation of a veterans memorial advisory committee, and the need to prioritize funding for three major road projects.

The committee reported it is preparing a solar grant application for the Public Services Building, which is one of the few city facilities without solar panels. The city’s public services staff also proposed forming a veterans memorial advisory committee that will include three public-services department members plus representatives from community organizations that work with veterans; the advisory committee will meet monthly.

Committee members said the city faces a trade-off in street funding: three large road projects — Roden Road, Morris Road and Longmire — will require substantial investment, and the council must decide which projects to fund now and which to delay. Committee members noted that Rowan Road requires a water-main replacement (old asbestos-cement pipe) when resurfacing is done.

The committee also discussed potential minor code cleanups intended to preserve community character and mentioned future consideration of utility wraps and additional building maintenance projects. No formal council action was taken Sept. 23; items were presented as committee updates and potential future agenda items.

Staff urged council members with questions to follow up with public services staff for project-level details and cost estimates.
