Skowhegan transfer station to host hazardous waste day; new recycling trailers arriving

Town staff updated residents Sept. 9 that the town's household hazardous waste day will take place Saturday, Oct. 4, and that the event will be set up inside the transfer station this year. Residents are asked to call the transfer station to register and to leave name and number if staff cannot answer immediately.

Cindy, who works at the transfer station, said flyers listing acceptable and unacceptable materials are available and asked residents to avoid bringing regular trash to the site on that Saturday. She also said the setup will be different this year because of operations in a new building and asked people to consider arriving in the afternoon if possible.

Cindy also announced the town received three recycling trailers through a grant; they currently await registration at the state DMV before being deployed. Two trailers will be placed at public locations for 24/7 drop-off of cardboard and mixed paper; a third will be used for scheduled pickups with schools and businesses. Cindy invited businesses that do not currently recycle to contact staff for possible pickup schedules.

A resident asked about the transfer station sign; staff said a new sign design is at a local sign shop and should be installed before winter.

The announcements followed department reports on paving and pump installation elsewhere on the agenda and were presented during the meeting's department and public-comment portions.
