Manatee commissioners split over Bradenton Area EDC contract; no extension approved before Sept. 30 expiration

After several hours of debate and wide public comment at its Sept. 16 meeting, the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners did not approve a renewal or extension of the county's reimbursement contract with the Bradenton Area Economic Development Corporation.

The board split on multiple motions. A motion to terminate the county's reimbursement agreement with the EDC failed on a 3-4 vote, with Commissioners Tal Sadiq, Bob McCann and Jason Bearden voting to end the contract and Commissioners George Cruz (chair), Carol Ann Felts, Amanda Ballard and Mike Ron voting to keep it. A follow-up motion to approve the existing/recommended agreement likewise failed to carry. After the votes, County Attorney staff advised the board that the existing contract is set to expire on Sept. 30, 2025 and that no board action had been approved to extend or replace it.

The EDC's request to renew a reimbursable agreement for $336,900 drew extended questioning during the meeting about measurable results and return on the county's investment.
