GLASGOW, Ky. — Jailer Shirley reported to the Barren County Fiscal Court on Sept. 16 that inmate crews continued roadside cleanup and other county work, logging substantial miles and estimated labor savings.
Shirley said inmate crews (state inmates) operate four crews that pick up litter and perform county work. For August the crews covered 136.9 miles, collected 547 bags of trash, picked up 15 tires and recorded 5,552 hours (reported as "put in 5,552" — meeting audio indicated hours). Year-to-date through August the crews had covered 967 miles, removed 5,337 bags of trash, collected 297 tires, removed 136 wildlife (likely carcasses) and recorded 43,576 man-hours. Using $15 per hour as the value cited in the meeting, Shirley said the county's estimated labor savings to date is $653,640.
Shirley noted the reported figures for roadside pickup do not include other work crews have done on county buildings, health department cleaning and annex-building tasks; those additional hours were not included in the pickup totals.
Ending: The court thanked the crews and jail staff; no policy changes or budget requests were recorded in the meeting minutes regarding inmate labor.
Note: The $653,640 figure is an estimate the jailer provided using the $15/hour value reported in the meeting.
