Council authorizes sale of former police station site for Lewiston Auburn Community Market

The Lewiston City Council on Tuesday authorized the city administrator to execute a purchase-and-sale agreement with Lewiston Auburn Community Market Inc. to redevelop the former police station site near Lisbon Street.
The market project plans call for demolition of the vacant building and construction of a roughly 20,000-square-foot facility to include a full-service grocery, commercial kitchens for food startups, on-site cold and dry storage, community space and parking. Project advisers told the council the design has been driven by long-range downtown planning and the Growing Our Tree Streets report.
Becky Conrad, an advisor to the market project, told the council the developer will operate a for-profit market that is intended to support local food producers, provide pedestrian access from downtown and serve nearby neighborhoods. Councilors voted 7–0 to authorize the administrator to proceed with the sale and execution of the agreement.
The agreement moves the project from planning toward site disposition and redevelopment; the developer said it expects to seek local permits and begin pre-construction steps once the sale closes.
