Summary
At its September 2025 meeting the Opelika Historic Preservation Commission approved last month’s minutes, granted two certificates of appropriateness for window and storefront work, noted two withdrawn items, and recorded a demolition approval for two South Railroad buildings contingent on planning commission sign‑off.
The Opelika Historic Preservation Commission at its September 2025 meeting took several procedural and project actions, including approving prior minutes, two certificates of appropriateness (COAs) and a conditional demolition authorization for a large downtown redevelopment project.
Minutes: The commission opened the meeting and approved the minutes from the August meeting without amendment.
815 Sixth Avenue COA: The commission approved a certificate of appropriateness to replace all windows at 815 Sixth Avenue in the Northside Historic District with beveled triple‑slider windows in white metal frames, per the staff recommendation. Staff described the structure as non‑contributing and recommended the new metal framed triple‑slide windows to match existing openings; the motion carried.
121 South Ninth Street COA: The commission approved an application to enclose a display area and modify the storefront at 121 South Ninth Street in the downtown historic district. The proposal would enclose the current display area with a wood‑frame storefront and single wood door on the street facade, install a rib‑steel garage door at the rear for moving displays, remove an unused middle door, and pull the storefront forward for continuity; staff recommended approval of the storefront, the single wood door and the removal of the center door.
Withdrawn items: Agenda items 2 and 3 were withdrawn and will be rescheduled for a future meeting.
Demolition authorization (items 6 and 7): Separately and following extensive discussion on the larger South Railroad redevelopment (see separate article), the commission approved demolition of two conditionally contributing buildings (agenda items 6 and 7, packet reference 97921) with the approval expressly contingent on planning commission review of the project’s unit count and site plan. The commission’s action did not approve design details or final materials; applicants must return with final drawings and samples.
Other business: Staff reported no new enforcement cases. The commission scheduled its next meeting for October 9, 2025, and adjourned.
