Hearing on 54 Knox Street dangerous-building determination continued to Oct. 7

The Lewiston City Council on Tuesday tabled two hearings about the property at 54 Knox Street until Oct. 7, at the owner’s request and following staff recommendations.
City staff and the fire department had previously declared the structure unsafe for occupancy as of Aug. 7 and sought council review under the city’s enforcement procedures and Title 17 provisions governing dangerous buildings. The owner, Andrews Management LLC, asked for additional time to complete a rehabilitation plan; the owner’s attorney and the bank with an encumbrance on the property addressed the council during the hearing.
Director Conner told the council Andrews Management had met more than 10 expectations set by the city and fire department to reduce immediate hazards and recommended a stay of the hearing until Oct. 7. The council voted unanimously, 7–0, to table items 11 and 12 and to allow the owner additional time to finalize plans.
The two items will return on Oct. 7 for continued proceedings including a determination of whether the structure currently constitutes a nuisance or dangerous building under Title 17 and, if so, what abatement or disposal actions the council finds appropriate. The property ownership, lienholders and tenants were asked to remain available and to provide plans or documentation for council review.
