Northern Lebanon School District opens new gym, starts year on time; board notes cell-phone policy enforcement

The Northern Lebanon School District Board of Directors heard that the district opened its new building and gym and started the school year on schedule, and that staff are enforcing a new student cell-phone policy, officials said at the board's September meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Messinger told the board the district "was in school on time" and that, as staff continue finishing minor tasks, each day "it feels more like a finished product than a product underway." He commended staff for the work that let the district open on time.
Director England echoed that the year "had a good start" and described early effects of the district's new restrictions on student cell phones. "Multiple teachers have come up to administrators and said, 'it is so nice to see kids walking in the hallway talking. It is so nice at lunchtime to see kids talking to each other instead of being buried on that phone,'" England said. He added that some students are still testing the rules and that discipline has already been applied in some cases.
Board members encouraged the public to visit the new gym and attend early-season events. Director England noted the new gym is open and invited people to the Thursday home volleyball match. He also described an upcoming Legacy Night tied to the football game that pairs kindergarten students with seniors and includes roughly 30 booths and vendors.
Student council representative Nathan, speaking as the incoming student representative to the board, said hall decorating has resumed and listed fall activities including a pep rally, HOKO and Powder Puff events. He said the student council's new president will be Liv Hansel.
The board did not receive public comment at this meeting. Other informational items on the agenda included notices about curriculum reviews to be voted on in October, a list of district mental health teams, and links for previewing family and consumer science (FCS) textbooks that staff said are still awaiting full PDF access.
