Avon Grove staff report summer facilities work complete or underway; early-learning lab set for Oct. 7 opening

Avon Grove School District facilities staff on Tuesday reviewed major summer projects across the district, including deep cleaning, classroom flooring, painting, HVAC and boiler replacements, and building-specific repairs. They also reported the early-learning lab will open to young children on Oct. 7 and described how high-school students are participating in the program.
The update covered multiple schools. "ServiceMaster crew probably spends at least 2 weeks in each building, doing a deep clean of each building," facilities staff said, and cited painting and flooring projects at Penn London and London elementary schools. At the high school and middle school, routine maintenance included gym-floor screening (light sanding and refinishing on a recurring schedule) and replacement of HVAC bearings and other parts.
Why it matters: district officials said the projects are intended to ensure buildings and systems are ready for the school year. Several committee members asked about lingering HVAC issues and parts availability; administrators said they have been prioritizing repairs and that many units were operable on day one. "We have a plan a and a plan b, with the the compressor units that Dan was referring to earlier. We'll be fully ready to go," a school official said when describing contingency planning.
Officials described the early-learning lab work as nearly complete. Cabinetry and cubbies are in place, and contractors are finishing countertops and other items. School leaders said the first day for young learners is scheduled for Oct. 7. The district reported 59 high-school students are enrolled as the lab's “big friends,” divided into four sections so that high-school learners can participate without disrupting their own schedules. "The first time the the little 4 year old will be there, will be October 7," an administrator said.
Committee members thanked facilities crews for summer work and pressed staff on specific items such as gym-floor cadence and timing of unfinished painting. On gym-floor maintenance, staff confirmed screening is done annually with a deeper sanding every two to three years. On the cafeteria painting at one building, staff said that work is most likely scheduled for next summer.
The operations committee then moved on to the next agenda item, a separate facilities improvement update that included single-user restroom access and security upgrades.
