Sykesville treasurer reports $294,000 county payment and $457,000 in real estate taxes; police license‑plate reader cost prompts budget amendment
Summary
Treasurer Jen presented the August 2025 report noting $294,000 from Carroll County under the town–county agreement and $457,000 in real estate tax receipts; a $10,000 license‑plate‑reader expenditure for the police department pushed equipment maintenance over budget and will be addressed with a budget amendment.

Treasurer Jen presented the town’s August 2025 treasury report at the Sept. 9 meeting, reporting $294,000 received from Carroll County under the town–county agreement and $457,000 in real estate tax revenue received in August.
Jen said the month’s larger receipts partly reflected timing differences from last year, when the real estate tax payment arrived in September. Major expenses for the month included salaries and an annual police software license renewal; grant revenue offsets some police software costs.
Council members asked about a line item at 100% for equipment maintenance. Jen said a recent $10,000 charge for a license‑plate reader is the primary cause of that overage and that the town had anticipated the need for a budget amendment; the item was previously discussed and a formal amendment will be processed during the first budget amendment cycle.
No formal budget votes were taken at the Sept. 9 meeting.
