Rush Valley schedules community emergency-preparedness meeting for Nov. 1

Council members discussed holding a community session to review emergency-preparedness kits, explain local response plans and recruit volunteers to serve as zone leaders in case of a disaster. The meeting was proposed for Saturday, Nov. 1, at 6 p.m., to be held in the town building; council members asked staff to prepare a flyer and to coordinate with county resources and the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Council member Pete described existing kits and mapping and said the county and nearby communities have been working with local faith-based and volunteer partners to assemble and locate supplies. "We just want people to within the town to understand that in the case of an emergency, that we are prepared," Pete said during the discussion. He and other council members argued the town should practice where materials are stored, how zone leaders would check on houses and how communications would operate if cell service is interrupted.

Council members suggested a Saturday evening open-house format with a short PowerPoint, displays and light refreshments; staff volunteered to help produce and distribute a flyer to residents. The council agreed in principle to hold the session and tasked staff to circulate a flyer announcing the date and time.

Context Council members said the town has some preparedness supplies and mapping but wants broader resident awareness and participation, citing the possibility that county and state resources will prioritize larger population centers in a major event.

No formal ordinance or expenditure was adopted; the meeting was scheduled as an informational/engagement event and will be run as a separate session rather than a lengthy regular council meeting.
