Mayor Dane M. White proclaimed September 2025 as Pollution Prevention Month for the city of Escondido and staff invited residents to participate in outreach and education events aimed at reducing pollution and protecting waterways.
Emma Potrotz of the city's environmental programs team described a slate of events the environmental division will host or support in September: a Water Smart Garden Design seminar on Saturday, Sept. 6; a hands-on compost workshop on Saturday, Sept. 13 hosted by the recycling and waste management team; a Watershed Literacy Program activity packet for children available through the Escondido Public Library; and a Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 20 in partnership with I Love A Clean San Diego, with staff hosting sites at Reedy Creek and Dixon Lake.
Potrotz said composting reduces organic waste sent to landfills and can reduce runoff, while water-smart landscaping reduces irrigation-related runoff that can carry pollutants into creeks. She invited residents to sign up for events via the environmental programs webpage and noted events were scheduled on different weekends to maximize community participation.
The council took a photograph with staff after the proclamation and thanked the environmental team for the outreach work. The proclamation encourages residents and businesses to participate in local pollution-prevention activities during September.
