The Enid City Commission on Sept. 4 appointed James Martis, Nancy Presnell and Michelle Solano to three open seats on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission.
The commission had three vacancies and four nominees. Each of the three successful nominees received five votes from Commissioners Norwood, Baker, Stallings, Dennis and Mayor David Mason; Commissioner Patterson and Commissioner Roberts were not present for the initial roll call or noted as absent earlier in the meeting.
Each nominee addressed the commission before the vote. James Martis said he has been listening to recordings of Dr. King for several years and described his desire to help keep King’s message ‘‘before others in our community.’’ Nancy Presnell described her background as a former child-protective-services worker and her work with the Garfield County Democratic Party in organizing events and volunteers. Michelle Solano referenced prior service on an ADA access board and said she wanted to help move the MLK program forward.
Mayor Mason instructed commissioners to mark their ballots and passed them to staff for tabulation; the results were read aloud in the meeting record.
