Mayor David Mason read a proclamation Sept. 4 recognizing JW Bodie for ‘‘extraordinary courage’’ after the Aug. 17, 2025 shooting at Integris Health, saying Bodie confronted an armed suspect and delayed the attacker, allowing others to reach safety.
The proclamation, read at Enid City Hall, detailed that the suspect fired outside the emergency room and entered the hospital with rifles; it said Bodie confronted the gunman, was fatally shot, and that the Enid Police Department’s response neutralized the threat. The proclamation noted Bodie’s prior experience as a retired probation and parole officer and as a security guard before his actions.
Mason said Bodie’s actions ‘‘embody the highest ideals of bravery, duty, and sacrifice’’ and announced that the Enid Police Department posthumously awarded Bodie a civilian commendation for heroism.
A family member addressed the commission, saying, “We always knew that dad was our hero,” and thanked the community and responding officers. Police leadership also spoke and the family accepted the proclamation and recognition at the meeting.
No formal vote was required for the proclamation; it was presented and entered into the public record during the meeting.
