Norman council appoints and swears in Brandon No Fire to fill Ward 5 vacancy

Mayor Holman opened the item by calling for a motion to accept or reject the nomination from the Ward 5 candidate selection committee. After a motion and second, the council voted unanimously to accept the committee’s nomination. Judge Nichols administered the oath of office to Brandon No Fire, and the council seated him as the Ward 5 representative.
The council also adopted a resolution extending appreciation to Michael Nash for his service as Ward 5 council member. The resolution noted Nash’s term as July 11, 2023, to Aug. 12, 2025, praised his attention to transparency and constituent communication and was adopted unanimously.
During miscellaneous comments and public comment, several residents congratulated No Fire. Diana Hutzsell, who identified herself as a Ward 5 resident and one of the finalists interviewed for the appointment, said she wished him well and urged the council to increase accessibility and transparency in agenda materials.
No formal amendments or conditions were attached to the appointment or to the resolution of appreciation.
Brandon No Fire spoke briefly, thanking the committee and his family for support. Council members offered welcome remarks and expressed appreciation to the Ward 5 candidate selection committee for its work.
Votes at the meeting on these items were unanimous; the council proceeded with other agenda items after seating No Fire.
