Superintendent Dr. Steven Cook asked the Bend‑La Pine Schools Board of Directors to add three work‑session dates to the district calendar so the board can complete a comprehensive review of governance policies, board goals and the superintendent evaluation and contract policy.
Cook told the board at its Sept. 23 work session that the district’s team had analyzed the scope of work and proposed adding Oct. 28, Jan. 27 and March 31 to the existing schedule. He asked for a head nod rather than formal action at the meeting; several board members indicated informal agreement.
The superintendent said the proposal would make seven total work sessions this year: the Sept. 23 meeting, Oct. 28, Jan. 27, Feb. 24, March 31, April 28 and May 26. He said the sessions would be grouped by subject: governance policies and board‑superintendent operating agreements; three meetings devoted to board ends and goals; and two meetings to address superintendent evaluation and related policy.
Cook told the board that the intent is to “memorialize” processes so they endure across board membership changes and to build an engagement process tied to those dates. He framed the schedule as an administrative proposal that the board could adjust if needed.
Board members discussed logistical matters such as conflicts with school holidays and the calendar’s sequencing. No formal vote or binding action was taken; directors agreed to plan for the additional dates and for staff to proceed with scheduling.
Board members and staff said the added sessions are intended to allow time for detailed policy redlines and for bringing revised governance policies back to the board in time for formal action later this fall or next summer.
Looking ahead, Cook recommended that the board consider a July annual reaffirmation of its operating agreement after newly elected members take office so the document remains current with the board composition.
