The Alabama State Board of Education on Dec. 9 adopted a series of resolutions recognizing five Alabama schools as 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools and awarding local honors, voting unanimously on each resolution.
The board voted to adopt resolutions recognizing Bruton Elementary (Bruton City), Orange Beach Elementary (Baldwin County), Mount Laurel Elementary (Shelby County), Hall-Kent Elementary (Homewood City) and Macmillan International Academy (Montgomery County) as 2021 Blue Ribbon Schools. The board also recognized Selma City Schools with an Alabama Performance Excellence Program award and declared December 2021 as Computer Science Education Week in Alabama schools. Each measure drew a motion, a second and a recorded “unanimous vote, governor” on the transcript.
The recognitions were presented with school representatives on hand for photographs and brief remarks. Board members praised teachers and administrators for the work that led to national recognition; Dr. Mackey thanked the educators and said the department would present resolutions and photographs after the meeting.

Board members and staff said the recognitions reflect classroom and school-level efforts. Superintendent Dr. Mackey thanked teachers and principals, saying the recognitions reflect work that “invite[s] you to Washington and say this is something we really want to showcase as an excellent school.”
The board paused the meeting briefly to take group photographs and noted that schools delayed by highway traffic would be recognized in the subsequent work session.
