Resident urges SEDA and city not to develop downtown parking lot near City Hall

Mike Quavilla told the Springfield Economic Development Agency on Sept. 22 that removing the parking lot south of City Hall for apartment construction would harm downtown businesses and reduce convenient and accessible parking.
Quavilla said the lot supports visitors to the museum, the Emerald Arts Center, City Hall, the library, the Wildish Theatre and several restaurants. “It would remove parking for cars and bikes for the museum, the Emerald Arts Center, City Hall, the library, Wildish Theater, a number of restaurants in the area, and a whole lot of businesses,” Quavilla said. He also said the lot provides convenience for people visiting City Hall and parking for disabled and elderly people.
Quavilla suggested there are alternative sites for housing development, including vacant lots on Fifth Street and other underused parcels downtown, and he urged the agency not to develop the lot between the museum and the Emerald Arts Center.
The board took no action on the public comment during the meeting.
