Resident urges lights for public soccer fields; commission holds executive session on potential recreational property acquisition

During the public-input portion of the Sept. 23 meeting, resident and longtime volunteer organizer Eric Mwade urged the city to provide lights for public soccer fields so adult and youth teams could play and host tournaments in the evenings.
Mwade described longstanding requests dating to 2016 for public soccer fields and said lack of lights limits playtime for workers and older youth, noting that games can run late and informal practice schedules are constrained. He said, “We believe it's reasonable for us to ask for lights.” The speaker said lights would allow the city to host tournaments that could bring traffic and revenue into the community.
Later in the meeting, the mayor moved the commission into a 20-minute executive session for preliminary discussions about acquiring real property for recreational purposes under KSA 75-4319(b)(6). The mayor announced the motion, which was seconded and carried; commissioners then entered closed session. After reconvening, the mayor stated, “No decisions were made.”
Commissioners and staff did not provide specifics in open session about parcels discussed in executive session; commissioners advised residents to follow up with staff for updates on potential park or recreation property matters.
