The Curry County Director of Operations reported to commissioners that several vehicles purchased in 2023 were titled in the name of the "Curry County Sheriff's Office" rather than the county, a discrepancy the director described as a problem that has left the county without registration documentation for those vehicles.
Staff said the sheriff’s gray truck (the vehicle the sheriff has driven since 2023) appears to have been operated without proper registration and possibly without insurance; the director said he has asked the sheriff to provide the truck’s location and to refrain from operating it until title and insurance issues are resolved. The director told the board he is retitling affected vehicles to the county to correct records.
The director estimated the number of mistitled vehicles at about five or six but said he would continue to investigate and provide details. Commissioners expressed concern about county liability if vehicles were driven without insurance and directed staff to continue resolving titles and registration issues.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; staff said they would continue to investigate, retitle vehicles as necessary and update the board.
