Anna Labetta told the board that the district's current approach to structured literacy and dyslexia professional development has been drawn out across years and that families and secondary educators still find gaps in implementation. She recommended a stakeholder task force composed of district staff, community experts, families of dyslexic learners and students with dyslexia to plan next steps and identify near-term relief such as literacy camps, structured foreign language options (for example, allowing American Sign Language to fulfill a foreign language credit for students needing structured literacy) and other targeted supports.
Labetta said the district's multi-year rollout leaves families waiting for practical resources and that a task force could translate professional development into programmatic steps and family-facing services more quickly. She spoke during the community comment period; the board did not take immediate action at the meeting but will continue policy and operational discussions in the coming months.
