Midvale planning staff seek regional funding for bridge, bike lanes and land-use update

During the meeting's department update, planning staff outlined four applications submitted to the Wasatch Front Regional Council seeking federal or regional transportation and planning funds.
Staff described a proposed pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Jordan River at Bingham Junction Park; said West Jordan city staff are coordinating nearby work on the opposite bank; and said the project was advanced by neighborhood interest. The second application would add buffered bike lanes on Bingham Junction Boulevard and pedestrian improvements near the Topgolf and restaurant area to improve safety and walkability.
A third submittal seeks funds to revise the city's landscaping provisions to make standards more uniform and to better incorporate the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District's water-efficiency standards into local code. Staff said the goal is simpler administration and stronger water savings.
The fourth and largest item staff hopes to fund is an update to the Midvale land-use plan; staff noted the land-use plan has not been updated since February 2016 and that a new plan would synthesize recent planning work (including a new transportation master plan) and produce more actionable land-use policy.
Staff also reminded commissioners about an upcoming planning conference and proposed a final review session for an internal "ground rules" book. A commissioner read an invitation from Mary Ann Tierlink of the Hillcrest High School music department inviting commissioners and the public to the school's friends-and-family concert at Husky Stadium on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
