The Janesville Common Council on Sept. 22 unanimously adopted Resolution No. 2025-2373 recognizing and supporting Janesville firefighters, paramedics and fire prevention bureau inspectors during Fire Prevention Week in October 2025.
The resolution calls attention to rising fire deaths and financial losses nationally and highlights the 2025 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety,” focused on lithium-ion battery risks. The text urges residents to buy only listed products, charge devices safely and recycle batteries responsibly.
"When it comes to prevention and preparedness, it's one of those things that, if it was 100% successful, firefighters would put themselves out of a job," Council member Erdman said during remarks praising the department’s year-round prevention and education work and citing the International Fire Code as carrying lessons from past tragedies.
Bob Kessenich of the Janesville Fire Department accepted the resolution on behalf of firefighters and thanked the council for the support, saying fire prevention week and community risk reduction are central to the department's mission.
The resolution notes national trends and the specific hazard that damaged lithium-ion batteries pose in waste environments, citing thermal runaway and potential explosions. The council approved the proclamation unanimously and invited members of the fire prevention bureau and station crews for a photo after the vote.
