Council approves first reading to list 500 Nassau St. S. on local historic register

The Venice City Council voted unanimously on first reading to add the property at 500 Nassau Street South to the city’s local register of historic resources.
Harry Klinkhammer, the city’s historical resources manager, presented the nomination and said the 1927 house — built from a pattern book and originally marketed as “Northern Italian” — meets multiple local criteria including significance in the city’s history, architectural distinction and status as a contributing resource to the Venezia Park National Historic District.
“The property meets criteria 1, 4 and 8,” Klinkhammer said, referring to the local code sections that set eligibility for the local register. He noted the owners, Alice and Michael Jeromen, recently acquired the house and plan restoration work and that the city already has the property documented in the national district nomination.
No members of the public had signed up to speak. The council approved the ordinance on first reading and scheduled it for final reading; the vote was unanimous.
Klinkhammer said the owners have begun restoration work, including replacing an aged roof, and intend to restore a Juliet balcony shown in the original pattern‑book image. The local designation makes the property eligible for local recognition and helps guide review of restoration work under chapter 87 of the City Code.
