The Birmingham City Council approved a contract with IMC Financial Consulting to continue the Financial Freedom Project, a financial literacy program the city runs in partnership with Birmingham City Schools.
IMC representatives told the council the program has expanded to 27 schools, with measurable pre‑ and post‑test gains and new offerings including Spanish translations of curriculum and an inaugural high‑school investment club supported by Edward Jones.
"Through that, your investment has yielded an incredible return," an IMC presenter said, describing growth over three years and an increase in participating schools. The presenter said IMC has added technology to deliver one‑on‑one consultations and has translated curriculum into Spanish to reach non‑English speakers.
Council members praised the program, calling it culturally relevant and valuable for life skills. Council President Pro Tem Wardene Alexander and Councilors Moore and Clark noted gains in student confidence and parental appreciation reported during program evaluations.
Ending: City leaders and IMC said they will continue to expand the program and work with Birmingham City Schools to align the curriculum with state financial literacy standards for ninth grade.
