Hammond City Council on Sept. 9 approved routine minutes, authorized a batch of claims totaling $7,177,304.42, agreed to move the introductory public hearing on the 2026 budget to Oct. 14 and confirmed Karen Janiga to the city library board.
The actions were procedural items handled early in the meeting and carried by voice vote or roll call. The council moved the meeting date because Oct. 13 falls on Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day and City Hall will be closed. Councilwoman Venez moved approval of claims beginning with claims dated Aug. 26, 2025, and ending with claims dated Sept. 3, 2025, claim numbers 7,742 through 8,081, inclusive, in the amount of $7,177,304.42; Councilman Spatali seconded. Clerk Golic conducted a roll call showing Alexander: yes; Spatali: yes; Venez: yes; Kalinski: yes; Salinas: yes; Tyler: yes; Emerson: yes; Rakos: yes; Wurple: yes. The record shows the motion carried 9-0.
Councilwoman Menas moved to change the council meeting scheduled for Monday, Oct. 13, to Tuesday, Oct. 14 (the city cited closure for the federal holiday); the motion passed on a voice vote. Later in the meeting, the council nominated Karen Janiga to the library board. Councilman Rakos moved the nomination, which was seconded and approved by roll call (9-0).
Other routine business concluded the meeting and members adjourned by unanimous voice vote.
