Mitchell Council commits future capital funds to build second fire station

Mitchell City Council voted Oct. 6 to commit city capital funds toward a new fire station to improve response times on the north and west sides of the city.
The motion to fund the project from the city's future capital projects account carried after discussion of response-time benefits and the city-owned site near the water-treatment facility. "This is the best location because the property the city already owns," one councilmember said during debate.
Councilmember Tim moved to fully fund the project with the future capital allocation; Jeff seconded the motion. Staff and the fire department said design work could begin in 2026 and construction would follow in 2027 if the schedule holds. Shannon Sandoval of the fire department confirmed the department has started recruitment for additional personnel and that new hires could bunk in the existing station until a second facility is operational.
Council members discussed location tradeoffs (Highway 37 vs. other sites) and asked staff to return with refined site and coverage analyses. Finance staff (Stephanie) confirmed the city can appropriate funds now from the future capital projects account and supplement that funding next spring from sales-tax revenue that comes in above budget.
Ending: Council asked staff to proceed with design work and return to council with the design cost estimate, a site coverage analysis and an updated schedule; staff said design could be budgeted in 2026 and construction could follow in 2027 subject to standard procurement and bidding processes.
