City approves updated SRO memorandum of understanding and introduces returning officer assigned to Western Elementary

Georgetown City Council on Sept. 22 approved a revised memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the school district that spells out roles and expectations for the city’s eight school resource officers (SROs).
Police officials told the council the updated MOU clarifies duties to avoid role confusion between school staff and officers. The agreement covers the eight SROs assigned to schools that feed Great Crossing High School; the Scott County Sheriff’s Office covers schools feeding Scott County High School, the city said.
Council members voted unanimously to approve the municipal order adopting the MOU. Police staff said they will take the finalized MOU to the school board for that body’s approval as well.
At the meeting the council also formally introduced Jim Wright as a returning SRO assigned to Western Elementary School. Wright is a 22‑year veteran of the Georgetown Police Department, a 28‑year U.S. Army Reserve veteran with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and a former instructor at the Criminal Justice Training academy in Richmond, officials said. Wright retired previously from the Georgetown department and returned to serve as an SRO.
Council members praised the clarity the MOU brings to officer roles and thanked Wright for his service.
