County approves $4.3 million renovation plan for school administration building; architect to begin drawings

Davidson County commissioners on Sept. 22 approved a renovation plan and design authorization for the Davidson County Schools (DCS) administration building.
Staff and school representatives reviewed a proposal that would add enclosed square footage by modifying the building's front porch and other envelopes, add an elevator to meet ADA requirements, and replace the forced-air mechanical system. County staff said the scope is intended to consolidate DCS support staff, bring child-nutrition staff under the same roof and address accessibility and moisture-control issues in the existing structure.
The board authorized Providence Partners to proceed with design work and approved a working budget in the neighborhood of $4.3 million, with staff noting the budget had started at about $2 million in earlier concepts and that the board wanted flexibility for moving and connectivity costs. A commissioner asked that the county manager and chair retain flexibility to make small changes to keep the project within the overall budget; the motion to approve the plan and allow design work carried unanimously among commissioners present.
Staff also described work the schools plan to do in a nearby building (repairing carpeting and painting in a space the schools will use during transition) and said the renovation schedule targets summer construction work to minimize operational disruption.
