Resident raises safety concerns about obstructive structures at 116 University Boulevard; code officer to follow up

A Depew resident urged trustees at the Sept. 22 meeting to address an ongoing property-maintenance issue at 116 University Boulevard, saying plantings, masonry and a 4-by-8 sheet of plywood obstruct sight lines and pose a hazard to neighbors and visitors to the home at 112 University Boulevard.
Greg Bajadas, speaking on behalf of his wife Diane and his 93-year-old mother-in-law Charlotte Kowach, described repeated problems dating to mid-2022 and said the house at 116 had been the subject of three variance applications that were denied by the Zoning Board. Bajadas said the property’s condition has been described as “deplorable” and that features recently removed (artificial trees) had been replaced with new obstructions.
Bajadas told the trustees the condition created difficulty for drivers and visitors backing out of the driveway at 112 University Boulevard and said nurses and hospice workers have complained about visibility. He asked the village to enforce its ordinances to protect public safety and property values.
Don, the village code enforcement officer, said the building department has been involved and that he would re-inspect the property; meeting discussion referenced past court action in July that had imposed instructions on the homeowner. Trustees and staff confirmed they had received submitted documentation and photographs; the transcript records Don saying the pictures were on his desk and that he would follow up the next day.
The board did not take immediate enforcement action at the meeting but confirmed the matter is an ongoing one under review by code enforcement and the police department as needed. The resident asked that the village make enforcement efforts to remove obstructions that meet the village’s fence and front-yard restrictions.
