Resident tells Marshall County drainage board road runoff is damaging his home; board points to highway department jurisdiction

Marshall County Drainage Board — Sept. 15, 2025 — A resident identified as Sean of 16360 Menominee Drive told the Drainage Board that runoff from a nearby road has routed beneath his house and caused structural damage, mold and repeated repair costs.
"Your road runoff has gone directly through my house, which is collapsing right now at this moment," the resident said during the public-comment period, describing new sinkage, a collapsed shed and ongoing health and repair impacts. He said he has paid for repairs, replaced a footer within the last week and has receipts documenting expenses.
A board member said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the county highway department rather than the Drainage Board. The board member said the highway department had inspected the site and would develop a plan to address the water flow, and he noted a Marshall County commissioners meeting scheduled to begin immediately after the Drainage Board session where the resident could raise the issue. The highway department staffer named in the exchange was Terry Verborn; the board said the department had been out to the property but had not contacted the resident directly.
The resident told the board he had contacted a lawyer and planned to pursue legal remedies if the problem is not resolved. The board did not take formal action on the complaint during the Drainage Board meeting and advised the resident to pursue the highway department and county commissioners for remedies and follow-up.
