Marshall County reviews courthouse door safety, approves treasurer counter remodel and audio upgrade for public meetings

Marshall County commissioners heard a security briefing about courthouse door locks and emergency egress, and approved facility improvements including a treasurer's counter remodel and an audio upgrade to improve live-streamed meetings.

Mike Marley, identified in the meeting as a Marshall County insurance consultant, and Andy Metzger, a loss-prevention consultant with Gibson Twin County, reported on a recent review of the magnetic locking system being installed in courthouse doors. Marley said the system includes a push button beside doors to permit exit from inside and that parts were being ordered to tie the door locks into the building fire alarm so that water flow (from the sprinkler system) or other alarm signals would fail the magnetic locks open. "If the fire alarm goes off... that will then disable the magnetic lock, and the doors will be able to be opened from the inside," Marley said. Commissioners asked staff to follow up with court security to confirm life-safety event behaviors and consider signage so people know how to exit if doors have a separate push-button release.

On facility upgrades, the board approved a proposal from K G Gravers (KG Gravers) to replace the treasurer's office front counter, windows and security fixtures for $38,680. The county said the work would improve security during tax collection periods and remove a patchwork of older fixtures. The board recorded a motion to approve the proposal subject to county-council review for funding coverage.

The commissioners also approved a proposal from Hyperwave (Hyperwave Communications) to replace the audio equipment, microphones and speakers in the commissioners' room to improve livestreamed meeting audio for $18,386.52. County staff said the upgrades are intended to fix intermittent audio issues for remote viewers and meeting attendees.
