Todd County students to present water‑quality project at regional science conference

The Todd County School District recognized student researchers Darren Espinosa and Izzy DeBray on the board agenda Sept. 22, saying the pair will represent Todd County and present a water‑quality project at a regional science conference in Minnesota.
Superintendent Roberta (last name not specified) invited the students to describe the project. Student Lizzie (last name not specified) said the team collected water samples on the local reservation "down under the bridge" and tested them for transparency, nutrient concentrations, hardness and pH. "The data showed lower transparency and elevated ammonia," Lizzie said.
Lizzie said the poster highlights results and "provide[s] a baseline for future water quality monitoring and management in the communities." She told the board the project was submitted to ASES and was accepted to compete in Minnesota. "Through this opportunity, we will learn from other tribes, other indigenous people ... about their projects," she said, and added the students plan to share the findings with classmates and peers.
Board members applauded the students following the presentation. The board did not take any formal action related to the project during the meeting; the recognition and students' remarks were part of the superintendent report and student recognitions portion of the agenda.
The board also noted recent student athletics achievements, including finishes at the Big Dakota Conference and boys' golf results, and gave brief congratulations to named student athletes.
