Oakland County offers free public-mural program; Rochester Hills resident urges city to apply

Jennifer Miller, a newly appointed representative to the Oakland County Arts Authority, used public comment time at the Sept. 22 Rochester Hills City Council meeting to urge the city to apply for a county-funded mural program.
Miller said the program — financed by the county arts millage — provides a free mural created by a local resident artist for three chosen communities each year. "It has to be done only by your authority and resolution in a public building," she said, and noted an application process and certain conditions that accompany the award.
Miller said she helped change prior perceptions about murals in Oakland County and encouraged Rochester Hills to apply. "Applications are available. It takes a while. Three communities are chosen each year," she told the council and left informational materials with the clerk. She offered to work with city staff and the DIA to facilitate an application.
Council members said they appreciated the suggestion and indicated the city’s public-arts contacts could follow up with Miller’s materials.
Why this matters: The program offers a no-cost opportunity for local public art funded by county millage dollars, but it requires a municipal authority resolution and placement in a public building if selected.
