Zoning board grants Salvatore Circle homeowners permission for side‑setback addition

The Danvers Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously to grant a finding allowing a side‑setback encroachment at 12 Salvatore Circle so homeowners Betsy and Bob Domichell can build a 16‑by‑24‑foot addition.
The applicants told the board the house is a preexisting nonconforming post‑war ranch and that the proposed addition would not be more nonconforming than the existing structure. The addition will provide a bedroom and bathroom and is designed so overhangs are included in the setback measurements. The applicants said they considered alternative expansions (for example, adding near the detached garage) but preferred the proposed location to preserve a one‑car detached garage and a larger rear yard.
Board members noted that several nearby homeowners submitted letters of support and that similar additions have been completed in the neighborhood in recent years. After questions about how much the proposed addition would intrude into the existing side setback (the proposal would place parts of the addition at about 10.9 feet from the lot line where 15 feet is required), the board found the alteration “not substantially more detrimental” to the neighborhood and approved the request.
The applicants were advised to follow up with the planning department for building permits and to record the decision as required.
